Whilst there is a newer focus on early years and infant aged practice of generating conversations and subsequent actions around gender stereotyping and representation, the concept of consent, personal boundaries/inappropriate touching and proactive language there is very little beyond that until you hit teens. Following the Rebel Girls phenom there was a deluge of books concerning the representation of girls in different fields and media – all of which is great of course – you can’t be what you can’t see after all – but most were literally modelled on the Rebel Girls format and never went beyond that. Conversations for tween tend to focus on online safety only, which whilst certainly necessary, don’t help girls and parents when it comes to their growing independence in IRL situations.
