I chatted to Sarah Fae this morning, she’s been working in sex ed for over a decade and also works at The Angelou Centre, one of the only black-led women’s organisations in the north east of England. She’s doing research into how parents talk to the tweens and teens about sex as she’s trying to develop resources and workshops to support parents at home since the pandemic has meant that no real worthy RSE curriculum was delivered over the last year or so. She interviewed me for a bit first and then we had lots to chat about. Lots of good chat about the need for adults to unpack their own stuff before they are fully ready to really then discuss some things with their kids, something I have learnt through my work on The Minefield first hand as well as in my personal life. We also talked about the effects of the first generations of boys growing up with access to free porn and how this feeds into rape culture, which has been on my mind as something to delve further into lately anyway so it was good to have that conversation with a profession in the field! Sarah definitely got me thinking and pointed me to some great resources that I’ll follow up on.
