‘How To Talk To Your Kids About Pornography’

Rising Parent Media, 2016

These books I’ve actually had for ages and dipped in and out of, I came across their website when researching for The Minefield year ago. However when I got one out ago recently after a need to refresh my brain because a girl in my ten year old’s class had googled “blow jobs” and my daughter came home with all kinds of questions – I actually found it immediately off putting. The quote “It’s normal to be curious about sex but it’s not normal to watch pornography,” put me right off. I don’t agree with the entirety of this statement and I find it reductive and unhelpful. I closed the book and whilst I keep meaning to give it more of a chance I haven’t.

I find this frustrating, in theory it’s a good resource, particularly because it’s split into age groups but it’s very text heavy and kinda reminds of the stuff you get on Pinterest that initially seems like helpful stuff about puberty and then turns out to be Christian/Mormon propaganda. Like, no, just. No.

But I will endeavour to give them another chance because I have found them a useful organisation in the past and don’t want to write them off altogether.
