Girls out loud is a great girls mentoring programme centred in and around Manchester and the north of the UK. Founded by Jane Kenyon the organisation works with potentially at risk teen girls and engages them in apprenticeships, mentoring and big sister programmes with great success.
There is so much evidence to show that mentoring is a great way to engage with and guide young women and girls. Younger girls always look up to the next age bracket and will most often be so much more receptive to what they can learn from them over adults a lot of the time. I think this is an undervalued exchange actually. If there was a way to model this across different subjects it could be really effective. Helping ‘older’ young women get the chance to lead and understand the value in their own knowledge and influence (for good) as well as help engage younger girls in subjects they might find tricky to talk to or about with adults or parents.
