This is a lovely talk – although the subject matter less so – but it’s great to see someone so young take ownership of her situation and try to do something about it. She opens with an interesting example of pornographic imagery of Marie Antoinette helping to spur on the French Revolution – the degradation of women can take down a monarchy. She also makes the very succinct point that most kids who come across porn on the internet actually went to the internet with very innocent searching intentions. It’s only 6 clicks away supposedly, although actually that figure is a very depressing one click now.
She also make more valid about points about sexualisation across all media, not just porn but pornified everything in youth culture in particular. Movies, magazines, adverts and music videos all rely on the capitalist ideal of sex selling. Music videos are often insane when you really stop and watch them, not al obvs, but some. It blew my mind when she mentioned the names of lipsticks and nail polish because she’s absolutely right. They do usually have mental sexual names and we just don’t think about the connection at all!! I could feel her when she starts tearing up looking at and talking about, her baby sister. I feel it real bad too. Just hug them tight.
