Too fat, to slutty, too loud

“Too Fat, To Slutty, Too Loud; The Rise and Reign of the Unruly Woman”

Anne Helen Petersen

Plume, Random House, 2017

This book is great and I want to re-read it it. It’s contemporary breakdown of women in popular culture will be really useful when thinking about media, social media but more crucially for when examining music videos. Music videos and the language of sexuality in pop music are arguably equally important. It’s the sort of media that will just as inevitably be consumed by kids and teens and in much larger quantities and parents are definitely concerned about how to dissect it.

Particularly for mothers who came of age in the 90’s during the “lost feminism” years of ranch culture and later the dawn of online porn. Using art and imagery to examine this era of their own adolescence unlocked something really interesting in the workshop conversations and shined a light on changing some of those narratives for their kids.
