Abstracting porn

I took some stills from porn imagery and tried to make them abstract in some way. This is a digital image where I have used procreate on my iPad to essentially draw over the image and turn it into abstract shapes and colours. I think this is an interesting way forward, since porn is predominantly a visual medium (although there is a sharp rise in audio porn and erotic literature over the last few years but one thing at a time eh?!) I want to essentially find a way to break down the images in the same way that we are breaking down the discussions into manageable chunks.

So I shall spend some time experimenting with ways to make a short process of abstraction, starting with images taken from porn, in an accessible way. Accessible meaning that the focus as always is on the process and not the outcome – the final image doesn’t really matter, using materials that aren’t intimidating to use to anyone not creatively inclined and also fairly affordable and realistic interns of use and budget. Primarily I have always used collage and essentially “colouring in” but with things like chalk or paint pens as these also have a really lovely finish so your work looks great and aren’t particularly messy either. This hopefully means you’re not excluding anyone who doesn’t feel they are artistic from joining in.

Hopefully this will be a 3- 5 step process each of which can be accompanied by a discussion about porn. I’ll develop this using the framework from some Porn Literacy programmes I have learned about and try to create a workshop from there.
