I had a great discussion with Occupational Therapist and Sex Educator Sarah Sproule today. Using examples of artworks as prompts we discussed a range of interesting topics including talking to your kids about porn, the ongoing process of building your identity, how important it is to try for moments of connection with your kids and the hard task of unpicking shame from not just our everyday language but our own experiences as well.
I showed Sarah three works of art:
“Girl At Mirror” by Norman Rockwell (1954).
“Portrait Of A Woman Who Has Fallen From Grace And Into The Hands Of Evil” by Carrie Mae Weems (1987).
“Joana and Aurele Making Out In My Apartment” by Nan Goldin (1989)
I think the structure went really well. If anything maybe a little long, each recording is coming in at an hour which for me personally is the best length for a good podcast like discussion but I think shorter would make it more accessible. The overall use of imagery really worked to facilitate the discussion and keep the conversation fresh. I need to think a little bit about how to link the images in the notes of the recording also so those listening can see the artwork, although when I listen to art podcasts I find I just usually do a quick google! Anyway, I’m pleased with how the format went so onto the next. For now I am ignoring the fact that I need to learn to edit these properly.
