Conversation with Lou Mensah, creator and producer of Shade podcast, on the process of executing ideas

I had the greatest conversation with the producer and creator of one of my fav podcasts, Shade centres conversations on race through the lens of Art and Activism and is amazing. Lou is also a home educator and we share many of the same ideals and irritations when it comes to children’s education.

My conversation with Lou was so bloody helpful ( I suspected it might!) Lou’s experience creating Shade and carving out a not only a well respected place for it amongst all the noise but also learning, shifting and evolving it until it felt right and worked for her is so great to see and take note of. She once gave the great advice of not saying yes to everything that comes your way and waiting til the moment and opportunities felt right for you and the evidence of this great strategy are abundant in Shade’s latest season in particular.

We talked about how to focus on ideas when you have a lot of them buzzing around your head as well as being realistic and practical about them. She also gave me some great advice about reaching out to others, be it stakeholders or collaborators, a skill she is perfecting when procuring guests for the podcast. We bonded over some of the trials and tribulations of having a tween girl and this also helped me formulate some of my ideas more clearly too. I have always been greatly inspired by Lou and our chat only cemented this in my mind more! My “dragons den” style pitch at UAL on Wednesday went really well and that’s in large part down to this conversation.
